A conference was organised in cooperation between the Bursa Branch of the Chamber of Architects and the Bursa Branch of the Chamber of City Planners. The conference took place at the Bursa Academic Chambers Union and was jointly organised by the two professional bodies. Urban Planner Bayram Vardar and Architect and Urban Planner Prof. Dr. Handan Türkoğlu took part as speakers, while numerous architects and urban planners attended the event. The programme examined Bursa’s urban plans from the past to the present and discussed the measures necessary to make Bursa a more liveable city.
In a statement following the conference, Urban Planner Bayram Vardar said: “Taking into consideration the reality of earthquake risk, which the Kahramanmaraş-centred earthquakes have once again brought to our attention, we held a workshop on which measures are needed to make the Bursa of the future more liveable and how these measures should be implemented. The workshop included technical analyses concerning the future development of Bursa’s planning culture, which began approximately a century ago, and addressed the principal issues considered by the technical committee between 2011 and 2013 in planning Bursa’s future. It was a valuable exercise in reviewing how green spaces and earthquake risk—a particularly topical issue at present—should be incorporated into plans to create a more liveable city,” he said.
Vardar noted that Bursa’s fault lines had been mapped and that local administrations were undertaking microzonation studies. He stated: “Within the framework of the Bursa Metropolitan Environmental Master Plan, all of Bursa’s fault lines were identified in the recent past. We have the data Bursa needs concerning earthquakes. Local administrations are currently conducting building-scale studies in smaller areas through what we call microzonation. These studies will, of course, contribute to making the Bursa of the future more liveable. In fact, all the data needed to establish the relationship between ground conditions and structures are now available. What remains to be done is for both technical professionals and our citizens to acknowledge this reality and determine their needs accordingly,” he said. (İHA)
